If you’re anything like me, you need a little sweet enjoyment at least once a day. Sugar gives us a hit of dopamine and its bloody delicious. Theres no need to completely cut it out – after all, we’re all looking for an ENJOYABLE diet that doesn’t breed restriction and inevitable binging – so let’s dig into how we can best satisfy your sweet tooth – both with food, supplements and some delicious recipes!
If your cravings are particularly strong and / or persistent, taking a look at your carbohydrate intake might be worthwhile. Carbohydrates (such as bread, fruit, sweet potatoes, lollies) can come as fast-digesting and slow-digesting. The fast-digesting ones (usually the more processed carbohydrates, that lack fibre) are the ones that spike your blood sugar quickly, which then later leads to a dip and a craving. Try tracking your carbohydrate intake for a few days (which you can do in our members app!) and ensuring it sits at around the 35% total intake mark.
My favourite hack with nutrition clients to stabilise blood sugar is getting them to add Cinnamon into their diets, especially when consuming high GI foods such as bananas. It slows the release of sugar into the bloodstream and therefore assists with cravings later on during the blood sugar crash.
I also start clients on a savoury breakfast rather than a sweet one, to start their day with very stable blood sugar levels. This often results in fewer cravings though out the day.
You don’t have to give up on sweet treats – even if you’re in a deficit. We promote BALANCE even when you’re consuming less. There are plenty of low-cal sweet treats that can help when cravings hit. Here are some of Sal’s faves:
There are some supplements that are known to help sugar cravings, but you must consult a nutritionist or other professional before commencing any new supplements, as they may not be right for YOU.
Remember, it’s not wrong to crave sugar, you just want to be in a place where those cravings are manageable. Focus on discretionary soul-foods 20% of the time and you’ll find that nice balance.
